Hidden Dangers in Flavouring Agents
Vaping products today contain over 180 different flavouring agents, many of which haven’t been tested for inhalation safety. One of the most dangerous is diacetyl, a chemical once used in popcorn factories that led to workers developing a condition now known as “popcorn lung.”
What Is Popcorn Lung?
Popcorn lung, or bronchiolitis obliterans, is a serious lung disease that causes scarring in the lungs’ smallest airways. According to Professor Donal O’Shea: “It causes inflammation and scarring in the bronchioles, making it increasingly difficult for air to move through.”

No Cure, Only Management
The condition is irreversible. Treatment options like bronchodilators, steroids, or even lung transplants only manage symptoms. O’Shea warns: “There’s no cure for popcorn lung… prevention – not treatment – is the best and only defence.”
The Bigger Risk
Even without diacetyl, other toxic compounds like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in vape vapours can trigger similar damage. With so many chemicals involved, the only safe path is to avoid vaping altogether.
Conclusion
Vaping may seem harmless, but the risks are permanent. Prevention is your strongest protection.
