Historic Moment
On May 8, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from Chicago was elected the 267th pope, becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church. Former President Donald Trump congratulated him on Truth Social, calling it a “Great Honor for our Country” and expressing excitement to meet “Pope Leo XIV.”

The Meaning Behind His Name
Prevost chose the name Leo XIV, aligning himself with previous Popes named Leo, known for strength and clarity. The last, Leo XIII, led from 1878 to 1903 and shaped the Church’s modern social teachings. “Looking to the history, Leos were strong popes,” said Father Vito Crincoli. “His people, he considered man not a machine.”

Papal Vision and Prior Service
Pope Leo previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and led the Augustinian order. In his first address, he said, “May peace be with all of you,” and urged the Church to “build bridges… be open to receive everybody that needs our charity.”

As the new head of the Church, Pope Leo XIV sets a tone of inclusion, peace, and global outreach rooted in history and hope.
