Doctor explains harsh reality of what could happen to your body once you stop taking Ozempic

Ozempic, a diabetes drug that’s gained fame as a weight loss aid, may come with serious side effects when stopped. Though it’s not FDA-approved for weight loss, many—including celebrities—have used it off-label to slim down.

But doctors are warning about the harsh rebound effects. On Good Morning America, Dr. Jen Ashton said, “Overweight and obesity are complex disorders caused by many factors,” including behavior, genetics, and medications. Removing Ozempic, a key tool for some, often leads to regaining lost weight—sometimes even more than before.

Dr. Robert Kushner added that coming off Ozempic can bring back cravings, raise blood sugar, and restore facial fat—what’s known as “Ozempic face.” Other side effects may include fatigue, mood swings, sun sensitivity, and changes to hair, nails, or breath.

Experts agree: Ozempic isn’t a magic fix. Once you stop, your body may quickly return to old patterns unless long-term lifestyle changes are made. Always consult a doctor before stopping any medication.
