Just one day after blasting Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” Elon Musk has stepped down from his political role. Though scheduled to exit on May 28, Musk resigned early following public criticism of the massive spending plan.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO had been serving as a special government employee—an advisory role limited to 130 days annually. Musk voiced frustration over the bill’s soaring costs, saying, “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful… but I don’t know if it can be both.”

His resignation followed a CBS interview and a cryptic meme posted by Trump on Truth Social. Meanwhile, Musk thanked Trump on X for the opportunity and reaffirmed his commitment to the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) mission.

Musk’s role focused on slashing government spending, cutting jobs, and ending DEI programs. The controversial bill—set to raise defense spending and offer major tax cuts—may add $600 billion to the deficit, directly clashing with Musk’s mission to reduce waste.

Despite the fallout, Musk insists the DOGE initiative “will only strengthen over time.”
