Brit backpacker, 24, facing 20 years in prison over e-scooter crash

Alicia Kemp, a 24-year-old British tourist, is facing up to 20 years in prison after a deadly e-scooter crash in Perth, Australia. Kemp allegedly hit 51-year-old Thanh Phan while riding under the influence, causing fatal head injuries. Phan died two days later.

Prosecutors say Kemp was riding at 12–15 mph when the crash happened on May 31. She had reportedly been drinking heavily before renting the scooter with a friend, who also suffered a fractured skull and broken nose in the crash. Her blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Kemp, from Worcestershire, had been in Australia on a tourist visa. The court denied her bail, calling her a “significant flight risk.” CCTV allegedly shows her swerving dangerously, forcing pedestrians to dodge her path.

Thanh Phan’s family described him as a loving father and called for stricter e-scooter safety laws. Perth officials have since suspended rental e-scooter programs, with Kemp set to appear in court again on July 15.
