Surgeon explains to ‘fit and healthy’ woman, 39, diagnosed with bowel cancer why it’s happening to people like her

Fitness coach Danni Duncan, 39, was stunned to learn she had bowel cancer—despite living what she described as the “healthiest lifestyle” of anyone she knows. The diagnosis came during a routine health check ahead of her 40th birthday.

Danni, a mum from Melbourne, had been experiencing bloating, dizziness, and fatigue, but initially dismissed the symptoms. A colonoscopy revealed a 2cm malignant tumour in her bowel. Doctors also removed part of her intestine and appendix in surgery just 10 days later.

Her surgeon suggested that chemical exposure in the 1990s, including processed and charred meats, could be a factor. “This is what’s happened — chemicals in your foods… we didn’t know the long-term effects until now,” Danni shared on Instagram.

Danni’s cancer is classified as stage 2, but has begun spreading into her lymph channels, making it high-risk. She’ll now consult an oncologist. Her story is a reminder to prioritize early checks—especially for younger adults—as global bowel cancer rates continue to rise.
