Tragedy struck Minnesota as two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot in their homes. State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were seriously injured. Officials say the suspect may have posed as a police officer.
Hoffman, elected in 2012, and Hortman, a respected House leader since 2004, both represented districts north of Minneapolis. Governor Tim Walz called the attack “politically motivated” and praised Hortman as “a giant in Minnesota politics.” He added they are “cautiously optimistic” about Hoffman’s recovery.
Police have issued a shelter-in-place order near Edinburgh Golf Course and warned residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be law enforcement. The suspect is described as a white man with brown hair, wearing a tactical vest and blue clothing.
The community is in shock as investigations continue. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and take safety precautions while the suspect remains at large. Hortman’s legacy as a compassionate and dedicated public servant will not be forgotten.
