Barack Obama has voiced deep concerns about the direction of the US under Donald Trump’s leadership. Speaking in Connecticut on June 17, the former President warned that the country is edging “dangerously close” to becoming an autocracy — a system where one person holds unchecked power.
Obama compared current trends to nations like Hungary under Orbán, where elections exist but fair representation and accountability fade. “What we’re seeing right now … is not consistent with American democracy,” he said, stressing that key democratic principles are being undermined.
His warning comes as thousands joined ‘No King’ rallies across all 50 states, protesting Trump’s policies and actions. Obama praised citizens for speaking out but reminded leaders of both parties to defend democratic institutions and reject authoritarian behavior.
Despite the bleak outlook, Obama remains hopeful. “I’m still the ‘hope’ guy,” he said, urging young people to channel their outrage into meaningful change. He emphasized finding common ground as the true path to healing and protecting democracy for future generations.
