Juliana Marins, 26, from Brazil, tragically died after being trapped 1,600 feet down Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. She slipped from a cliff during a hike on June 21 after her guide reportedly left her alone to rest. When he returned, she had vanished over the edge.
For four days, rescuers tried desperately to reach her. A drone spotted her stuck on a rock ledge, but dangerous overhangs and harsh weather made it impossible to secure rescue anchors. “The entire Brazil cheered and prayed… unfortunately, they could not save her,” tweeted Brazilian Senator Tereza Cristina.
Juliana’s family confirmed her death online, thanking everyone for their prayers and support. Her sister Marianna said Juliana got lost after losing sight of her guide.
