Officials issue warning as huge toxic jellyfish washes up at tourist hotspot

A massive lion’s mane jellyfish, nearly 5 feet wide, was recently spotted at Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine. Officials are warning locals and tourists not to touch the jellyfish due to its painful sting.

Known as one of the longest species in the ocean, lion’s mane jellyfish can reach up to 120 feet in length—longer than a blue whale. Though beautiful, their tentacles can deliver a severe sting, with experts advising medical attention if swelling is intense.

Reports of these jellyfish have increased in recent years. Scientist Nicholas Record noted, “They’re generally a sub-Arctic species… but the size and the frequency this year are unusual.”

The City of South Portland posted safety tips online: “Don’t touch it! Observe it from a distance. If found on the beach, notify a lifeguard.” The jellyfish may be stunning to watch, but their sting is no joke—stay alert and keep your distance.
