Cynthia Diekema, 61, was killed by an 11-foot alligator while canoeing with her husband, Dave, near Lake Kissimmee State Park, Florida. The couple’s canoe glided over shallow water when the gator lunged, causing Cynthia to fall directly onto the predator.
Dave tried to save his wife, but the alligator bit her torso and performed a deadly “death roll.” It swam away with her body before emergency crews could arrive. Cynthia was later found and pronounced dead at the scene.
Wildlife officials have since captured several alligators in the area to identify the one responsible. The attack is Florida’s only fatal gator incident this year. FWC has launched GatorWise to raise awareness and promote safety in areas where gators are common.
Cynthia’s final Instagram post, filled with joyful vacation memories, has turned into a tribute wall. “May the memory of your light never dim,” one follower wrote. Officials continue urging residents to avoid feeding gators and stay alert near water.
