Terrified teen called mum saying ‘something’s wrong’ – days later she didn’t recognise her

Beth was a bright, independent 16-year-old when her life changed overnight. After telling her mom, “something is happening to me,” she began experiencing seizures, rage, hallucinations, and paranoia. She no longer recognized her family and believed strangers were trying to harm her.

Her mom, Toni, was forced to quit her job and fight for answers. After months of terrifying symptoms—including 80 seizures a day, sudden paralysis, and uncontrollable outbursts—Beth was diagnosed with PANS, a rare neuropsychiatric disorder triggered by a misdirected immune response. “It was like someone flipped a switch,” Toni said. “I didn’t recognize her.”

With no treatment available through the NHS, Toni spent £8,000 for private care. Beth now receives weekly chiropractic sessions and therapy, which temporarily help her walk and function. “She lives for one day a week where she can move unaided,” Toni shared.

A GoFundMe has raised over £3,000, giving Beth hope through hyperbaric oxygen therapy. “I haven’t given up on life,” she wrote. The family dreams of a therapy dog, a downstairs room, and, one day, stability.
