Teen camp counselors reveal chilling moment they wrote girls’ names on their bodies as Texas flood death toll rises

Flash floods in central Texas have claimed over 100 lives, including 27 from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp. After a month’s worth of rain fell in just hours, the Guadalupe River surged to 26 feet, devastating the area and sweeping through the camp.

Teen counselors Maria Paula and Silvana Garza recalled the terrifying moment they realized help might not come in time. “We started to write our names on our skin… We did the same for the girls,” Maria said, fearing they may not survive.

Despite the panic, the teens worked to keep children calm. “We told them to pack a bag, to pack their favorite stuffed animal,” Silvana shared. They maintained a cheerful tone to avoid frightening the girls, even as they faced the unknown.

Camp Mystic issued a heartbreaking statement: “Our hearts are broken… We are praying for them constantly.” Search efforts for missing girls continue, as families, first responders, and the entire community grieve this unimaginable loss.
