Amedy Dewey was just 18 when her stepfather shot her in the face, killing her mother and leaving her with less than a 2% chance of survival. Seven years and 37 surgeries later, she’s using her voice to warn others about the dangers of domestic violence.
“I felt like I didn’t have a purpose in this world. It was just surgery after surgery,” Amedy told PEOPLE. “I want people to see the signs of danger, domestic violence, and abuse. If you’re not safe, get out.”
Her latest surgery in November was life-changing—doctors rebuilt her upper jaw using bone from her leg and gave her new teeth, allowing her to eat real food for the first time since the attack. “I was so happy I started dancing,” she said.
Now 25, Amedy is sharing her story to save others from similar pain. “This is what I went through. I want people to know when someone is unstable, especially if they have firearms. I don’t want anyone to suffer what I went through.”
