Australia is in shock after a brutal shooting left two police officers dead and another wounded.
Authorities say 56-year-old Dezi Freeman opened fire during a police raid in Porepunkah, northeast of Melbourne. Officers were investigating historic abuse claims when the gunman allegedly shot them “execution-style.” One officer was just days from retirement.
Freeman, described as part of the “sovereign citizen” movement, fled into the bush. “They were murdered in cold blood,” said Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush. He confirmed the suspect is armed and dangerous.
Local schools and facilities were locked down. “We’re all safe, but a bit rattled,” said Emily White, whose family runs a nearby caravan park. Residents have been told to stay indoors as heavily armed squads search rugged terrain.
“This is a day of deep sorrow and shock,” said Alpine Mayor Sarah Nicholas. “We are grieving together.”
