Boy, 12, dies after taking part in dangerous social media ‘blackout’ challenge as loved one speaks out

Sebastian, a 12-year-old boy from Castleford, England, died after allegedly attempting the viral ‘blackout challenge’—a dangerous social media trend where participants choke themselves to experience a brief high. He was found unresponsive on June 27, while celebrating his younger brother’s first communion.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed Sebastian was taken to the hospital but sadly died. While the incident isn’t being treated as suspicious, investigations are ongoing. His father, Marcin, believes the challenge led to his son’s death.

Loved ones described Sebastian as creative, kind, and full of life. “He taught himself guitar and keyboard. Always smiling, full of dreams,” reads a tribute on a GoFundMe page created to support his grieving family.

The fundraiser urges parents to stay informed and talk to their children about online content. “Let this be a quiet call for awareness… so no other parent has to feel this pain.” Sebastian’s death follows similar tragedies, including that of a 13-year-old in California earlier this year.
