Early Symptom Ignored
Six-year-old Hugh Menai-Davis died in 2021 after being diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. A year earlier, Hugh had a swollen stomach — a symptom doctors first dismissed as a “virus.” His parents, Frances and Ceri, believed it was a bug until the swelling worsened.
Shocking Diagnosis
“Our lives changed forever. The consultant said, we think Hugh’s got cancer,” Frances told MailOnline. The tumor caused fluid buildup in Hugh’s abdomen, making it hard for him to breathe. Despite the pain, his father shared, “He never moaned or complained, he just got on with it.”

Hope and Heartbreak
Hugh responded well to early chemotherapy. “We thought we were beating the cancer,” Frances said. He even rang the bell celebrating the end of treatment near his sixth birthday. But just months later, the cancer returned — and doctors said nothing more could be done.
A Message to Parents
Frances now urges, “Seek the advice of a doctor if something doesn’t feel or look right… No one knows your child better than you.”
