Captured Venezuelan leader Maduro makes 3-word remark as he is led to US jail in handcuffs

Nicolás Maduro has spoken briefly after his capture by US forces. Donald Trump announced the capture on Saturday, January 3.

Trump’s claim

Trump said the US struck Caracas early that morning. He said Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained.

Later that day, Trump held a long press conference. He said the US will “run the country” until a “safe, proper and judicious transition.”

Charges Maduro faces

US authorities have charged Maduro with several offenses. These include narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy.

He also faces charges linked to machineguns and destructive devices. One count alleges a conspiracy to possess them.

Maduro’s 3-word remark

A video circulating online shows Maduro in handcuffs. It shows him being escorted into DEA headquarters in New York.

As cameras recorded the moment, he smiled slightly. He then said: “Happy New Year.”

What Trump said next

Trump praised the operation and condemned Maduro. He said US forces worked with US law enforcement to capture him overnight.

He also claimed Caracas went dark during the mission. He thanked the military for what he called speed and precision.
