A recent TikTok video featuring 12-year-old North West has raised concerns among medical professionals after she appeared with a piercing through the skin of her finger. The unusual placement quickly drew attention, and a California dermatologist is cautioning parents about the risks.

Dr. Tanya Kormeili, a board-certified dermatologist in Santa Monica, explained that the hands are one of the worst places for this type of piercing. Because we use our hands constantly—and they come into contact with germs all day—any wound in this area is more likely to become infected. The location North displayed is especially sensitive, containing nerves and blood vessels that can be easily damaged. Even catching the jewelry on clothing or objects can slow healing and increase complications.

Dr. Kormeili added that infections in this area can spread to the bloodstream. In rare situations, this can lead to serious conditions such as endocarditis, particularly for people with underlying heart issues. She also noted other potential risks, including compartment syndrome, blood-borne infections, and toxic shock syndrome. Given these concerns, she questioned whether a child should have such a piercing at all.

While the medical warnings circulated online, North’s recent videos show that much of her dramatic style—colored contacts, temporary face tattoos, bright braids, and even blackened teeth—comes from playful experimentation rather than permanent changes. Her mother, Kim Kardashian, has said she supports North’s creativity while helping her handle public attention. Kim described her daughter as confident, imaginative, and learning who she is as she grows up in the spotlight.
