Sometimes freedom isn’t found in making more money — it’s in needing less of it.
That’s what Matt and Carlie, a young couple from Manchester, discovered when they sold their three-bedroom home, left their jobs, and moved their family to Bali, Indonesia. With three children — Lincoln, 7, Delilah, 4, and baby Adelaide — they traded the gray skies and high costs of England for sunshine, simplicity, and peace.

“We were tired of living to work,” Matt said. “Now, we live for our family instead.”
They bought one-way tickets and settled into a cozy three-bedroom home in Ubud, where rent costs just £2,000 a year. With what they saved from selling their £365,000 house, they’ve started building two villas on their own land — a dream they never could’ve afforded back home.
Life in Bali is slower, warmer, and full of meaning. The children spend their days outdoors, exploring rice fields, beaches, and waterfalls. Carlie says she’s “loving life,” embracing motherhood in a place where time feels abundant instead of rushed.

Of course, there are challenges — no family support nearby, new routines, and a very different culture. But for Matt and Carlie, the tradeoff is worth it.
“Every weekend is a family weekend now,” Matt said. “We’ve finally found what we were chasing all along — freedom.”
