Fans of Wicked: For Good were shocked when Cynthia Erivo revealed a worrying health issue during the film’s release. The movie opened on November 21 and instantly became a global hit, earning more than $226 million in its first weekend. It is now the biggest international opening ever for a musical film.
Still, the press tour leading up to the premiere was difficult. In Singapore, an Australian vlogger broke through security and grabbed Ariana Grande on the red carpet. Erivo reacted immediately, helping protect her co-star. The man was arrested, jailed, and banned from Singapore.

More trouble followed when Grande caught COVID-19 late in the tour. She had to pull back from interviews and public events.
At the same time, social media users began commenting on the cast’s appearance. Many compared older and newer photos of Erivo, Grande, and Michelle Yeoh. The online discussion, nicknamed the “Wicked Effect,” raised concern about the stars’ health.

Worry grew even more at the New York premiere. Erivo appeared on the red carpet but did not speak to reporters. Universal Pictures later confirmed she was sick and had lost her voice. They explained she needed full vocal rest. Grande supported her co-star, telling the audience, “She has to rest her voice.”
For a singer, losing one’s voice is a serious medical issue. Rest is essential to prevent long-term damage.
Fans continue to send love and encouragement as Erivo focuses on recovering her voice.
