Tylor Chase’s father has shared a painful update on why the former Nickelodeon actor is living on the streets — and says the family has been fighting for years to get him help.
Chase, 36, is best known for playing Martin Qwerly on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. Fans were stunned this month after reports placed him homeless in Riverside, California, alongside claims of substance abuse.

In an interview, his father, Joseph Mendez Jr., said the family’s struggle began more than a decade ago. He stated that Chase has faced addiction and has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia — conditions he says require steady, long-term care.
Mendez explained that Chase entered treatment several years ago and initially made progress. But, according to him, Chase later stopped taking medication and returned to drug use. He added that recent attempts to stabilize his situation in California have not worked because Chase has repeatedly declined ongoing support.

Local police have also said outreach teams offer services regularly, including shelter and treatment options, but that Chase often refuses.
Meanwhile, people close to Chase are trying again. Former child actor Shaun Weiss publicly said a detox bed and longer-term placement are available. Chase’s former co-star Daniel Curtis Lee reportedly helped him into a hotel room temporarily.
Mendez says the family remains hopeful — but insists real change depends on Chase accepting help.
