A mystery that gripped New Zealand for years has ended in tragedy. Tom Phillips, the father who disappeared into the wilderness with his three children in 2021, was shot dead by police. His children, ages 12, 10, and 9, were found alive and unharmed.

Police say the deadly incident followed an attempted robbery. Officers were fired upon, leaving one critically injured. Another officer returned fire, killing Phillips at the scene. One child was with him during the shooting but survived. Hours later, the other two were located safely at a remote bush campsite.
Deputy police commissioner Jill Rogers thanked locals for their help, saying, “These small, rural communities look after our people, and we’re grateful.” District mayor John Robertson added, “It’s just been an awful tragedy… Now we’re thinking of the children and what’s ahead of them.”

For four years, this story captured hearts around the world. The children’s safety brings relief, but questions remain about their future. What do you think should happen next for these kids?
