After losing her five-year-old daughter Ava to leukemia and later separating from her husband, Joseph, Eleanor feels her once-joyful life go quiet. Years after the loss, she longs to be a mother again and begins searching adoption sites, hoping for a fresh start.
One evening, she spots a little girl named Charlotte on the Grace Adoption Services website — and the child looks uncannily like Ava. Eleanor calls the agency, meets with staff member Samantha, and shares her story. Although Samantha notes that adoptions often prefer two-parent homes, she reassures Eleanor that being single won’t automatically disqualify her.
Eleanor soon meets Charlotte in a park. The shy child slowly warms up as they draw together, and a bond begins to form. Over the following weeks, Charlotte visits Eleanor’s home, grows comfortable in her new room, and becomes more open about her time in foster care. Eleanor eventually tells Joseph about the adoption plan, and he supports her, even joining dinners and counseling sessions as they try to heal.
The adoption is finalized in court, and Eleanor promises Charlotte she will never have to return to foster care. Then a shocking call changes everything: Charlotte’s biological mother claims Joseph could be the girl’s father, raising concerns about a legal challenge.
Joseph admits to a brief affair after Ava’s death and agrees to a paternity test. Days later, the results confirm he is not Charlotte’s biological father. With the threat removed, the adoption stands — and Eleanor embraces Charlotte’s resemblance to Ava as a bittersweet coincidence and a second chance at family.
