Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke has opened up about his 13-year marriage to Arlene Silver, 53, and how their 46-year age difference never got in the way of love.
The Mary Poppins star met Silver backstage in 2006. “She walked by and for some reason, I just jumped up and said, ‘Hi, I’m Dick,’” he told People. “There’s something about her… it got me — and I was right.”
Despite early criticism, Van Dyke said “everyone [said] it wouldn’t work,” but added, “We get along so well.” Silver agreed: “It’s eerie how well it works. People the same age don’t last.”
The couple shared their story at the Vandy Camp event on April 20, highlighting their support for one another. “He made me feel like I can do anything,” Silver said.
Van Dyke credits his youthful energy to “genes” and “a beautiful young wife to take care of me.” He also swears by a positive attitude and regular exercise: “I still go to the gym three days a week… exercise is the answer.”
