Disney’s 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is under scrutiny for its iconic kissing scene. While the film has been recognized as ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’ by the U.S. Library of Congress, some modern viewers argue it needs an update for today’s values.
The Consent Controversy The debate centers around the prince kissing Snow White while she is unconscious. Journalist Nichi Hodgson criticized this moment, saying: “Disney has a moral duty. They make billions every year from their films. Children watch their films from a very young age, and they are some of the first stories they imbibe.” Actress Kristen Bell also questioned it, asking her children, “Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission?”

Differing Opinions Not everyone supports changing the film. Some defend the scene, arguing, “It’s a fairytale, leave Disney alone,” while others see it as “the kiss of life” rather than a problematic moment.
The Remake’s New Direction Following the controversy, Disney’s 2025 Snow White remake is set to take a different approach. Actress Rachel Zegler noted, “This time, there won’t be a huge focus on the two,” even joking that the prince’s scenes might be “cut.”
