Doctor explains impact having sex every day has on your body after woman shared experience with husband

A year-long challenge

Brittany Gibbons said she had sex every day for a year.
She said the challenge helped her and her relationship.

What Brittany shared

Gibbons wrote about it for Women’s Health.
She said:
“For the first time, I was more concerned with every part of sex that felt good than finding a flattering angle to hide my stomach or back fat.

“My body was being enjoyed by the both of us, equally.”

Is it safe daily?

Michelle DiBlasi, DO, is chief of inpatient psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center.
According to The Healthy Report, she said daily sex can be safe.

She said:
“The answer is whatever people are comfortable with. It’s safe to have sex every day, even multiple times a day.

“But it’s also OK to not have sex that often.”

Stress and sleep benefits

DiBlasi said frequent sex can reduce cortisol levels in the body.
She said this can improve mood and lower stress.

She said:
“This is a hormone that’s released when you’re under stress—so [having sex] lowers the stress in your body to make you feel calmer and it can help you sleep better at night.”

Bond and hormones

She also said sex can release endorphins in the brain.
These act as natural painkillers and mood boosters.

Also, sex can build a stronger bond with a partner.
DiBlasi said oxytocin helps people bond, and it can last.

She added:
“And the nice thing about it is that after you have sex—or even just have close physical touching or cuddling—that oxytocin can last in your body for up to two days.”
