Some stories remind us how delicate life can be, especially when it involves a child. That feeling was felt deeply in Shanghai, where doctors made a discovery few could imagine. A little girl was brought in because she wasn’t speaking or moving like other children her age.
Her parents had noticed the delays growing more worrying each month. Doctors knew something was unusual even before she was born, but early scans could not show the full picture. By her first birthday, she could only say “mom,” and her head seemed larger than expected.

The turning point came when doctors performed a CT scan. They found a large mass inside her brain with bone-like features and a clear outline. To their shock, it was a malformed fetus — a rare condition known as a parasitic twin.
This rare disorder happens when one twin stops developing and becomes trapped inside the other. It occurs in only one out of every half-million births. The mass pressed against the areas of the brain responsible for movement, learning, and speech.
Doctors knew they had to act quickly. They performed a craniotomy to remove the mass, hoping to relieve the pressure and give the little girl a chance. Inside, they could see faint shapes of a tiny mouth, eyes, and arms.

Despite their careful planning, the child developed severe seizures after surgery. She passed away 12 days later, leaving her family and doctors heartbroken. Her story is a reminder of how precious, fragile, and unpredictable life can be.
