President Donald Trump has demanded the removal of his portrait from the Colorado State Capitol, calling it “truly the worst.” On March 24, 2025, he posted on Truth Social, expressing dissatisfaction with the painting. “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves…” he wrote. He alleged that Governor Jared Polis was responsible, though Polis had no involvement.
Artist and Fundraising Effort
The portrait was created by Sarah A. Boardman and funded by Colorado Republicans. In 2018, former Senate President Kevin J. Grantham launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising $10,884. During the 2019 unveiling, Grantham remarked, “Whether this portrait brings a smile or scowl to your face, remember you have the right to do so because this is the United States of America.”
Governor Polis Responds
Governor Polis responded through a spokesperson, stating, “Gov. Polis was surprised to learn the President of the United States is an aficionado of our Colorado State Capitol and its artwork.” The statement highlighted that portraits of past presidents traditionally line the Capitol’s Rotunda.

Opinions on the portrait vary. Some online users agreed with Trump, saying, “He’s right. That looks nothing like him,” while others disagreed, stating, “It’s a fine portrait. Spot on.” Boardman defended her work, explaining, “In five, 10, 15, 20 years, he will be another president on the wall who is only historical background and he needs to look neutral.”
