US President Donald Trump has sparked backlash for wearing a blue suit instead of black at Pope Francis’ funeral in Vatican City on April 28. World leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Keir Starmer, joined the ceremony honoring the late Pope, who passed away on April 21 at age 88.
Critics flooded social media, calling Trump a “disgrace” and a “tone-deaf idiot” for his choice of attire. One user wrote: “Trump the only world leader without the respect to wear black at Pope Francis’ funeral. He’s a disgrace to America and the world.”

Adding to the outrage, Trump made comments about using the funeral as an opportunity to discuss trade deals: “We’re going to meet with a lot of the foreign leaders… Trade deals are going very well,” he told MSNBC.
David Gibson, director at Fordham University’s Center on Religion and Culture, said Trump’s relationship with the Vatican had been “fraught,” worsening during his second term due to his aggressive stance on migrants and international aid.
