December 1999 marks one of the darkest chapters in Venezuela’s history. The coastal state of Vargas was devastated by torrential rains that dumped a year’s worth of water in just 72 hours. The resulting landslides and floods claimed between 15,000 and 50,000 lives, wiping out entire communities.
Amidst the destruction, a heartbreaking scene was captured on video that remains etched in the nation’s memory. Rescue workers discovered a man buried neck-deep in mud. As they frantically worked to free him, he wept and begged them to stop.
“Don’t Take Me Out”
The father’s plea baffled the firefighters until he revealed the devastating reason: “I’m holding my two daughters by the hands.” Though the girls had tragically perished beneath the debris, he refused to let go of them.
Ultimately, the man was rescued, but his agonizing choice became a lasting symbol of sacrifice. The story even inspired the song Recuerdos (Memories) by musician Porfi Baloa, who later met the survivor. More than two decades later, this father’s unwavering devotion stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit in the face of unimaginable loss.
