Dwyane Wade Says His Family Didn’t ‘Feel Protected’ or ‘Safe’ in Florida

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, reflecting on their move from Florida to California, emphasize it was about family safety. Wade states, “We had to think about our family and how it looked…what we want them to see on a daily basis.” The decision wasn’t easy for the couple, as Florida had been their home for years. However, Wade explains, “Florida just wasn’t it for us at that time anymore.”

California became their new home, especially for their daughter Zaya, who came out as transgender. Wade highlights feeling comfortable with the community representation there. Wade expresses disappointment over recent events in Florida, including the NBA’s Orlando Magic donating to a controversial political campaign.

Feeling unsafe and unseen, Wade asserts the need for change, possibly even political involvement. Reports surfaced about him potentially running for the U.S. Senate, but Wade downplays it, stating, “It’s just conversation…I don’t play the politician games.”

Wade and Union’s family includes children from previous relationships, emphasizing their commitment to family and safety above all else.
