E.A. Hanks, daughter of Tom Hanks, has released a revealing memoir titled The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road. In the book, she shares painful memories from her childhood, including emotional and physical abuse, neglect, and chaos after her parents’ divorce.
E.A. recounts that after her mother moved her and brother Colin to Sacramento without telling Tom, their life became unstable. “From 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a Sacramento girl,” she wrote. She describes a home filled with smoke, spoiled food, and emotional volatility.

As things worsened, E.A. says “emotional violence became physical violence,” prompting a change in custody and a return to Los Angeles. Her story also revisits a formative cross-country road trip with her mom, which later inspired the memoir.
Tom Hanks responded with pride, saying, “She’s a knockout… and a bold journalistic literary mind.” Despite the difficult revelations, he praised her honesty and courage in telling her truth.
