Dangerous Symptoms: Pulsatile Tinnitus
Hearing a pulsing or “whooshing” sound in your ear, known as Pulsatile Tinnitus (PT), could indicate a serious underlying condition. Dr. Ahmed Abd Elbary warns, “If you have got this, it is something you should definitely bring up with your doctor.”
What Is PT?
PT causes rhythmic thumping or throbbing in one or both ears. It differs from common tinnitus, often linked to more serious conditions. According to PennMedicine, it “is more likely to have an identifiable source.”
Causes and Risks
PT can result from changes in blood flow, caused by severe exercise, pregnancy, or thyroid issues. However, it can also signal more serious conditions like aneurysms, atherosclerosis, or even tumors. “Sometimes, your blood flow can become more turbulent… most often due to a tumor,” Dr. Ahmed notes.
Seek Medical Attention
While PT often resolves on its own, it’s crucial to consult a doctor to investigate the cause. Early detection is key, especially for conditions like aneurysms or tumors that could be life-threatening.
