The family of 31-year-old Adriana Smith from Atlanta has shared a careful and hopeful update about her infant son, Chance. Earlier this year, Adriana experienced a sudden medical emergency while in the early weeks of pregnancy. By May, doctors determined she was brain-dead. Because she was only nine weeks pregnant at the time, Georgia law required that she remain on life support long enough for her baby to reach a stage where delivery was possible.
In June, doctors performed a premature C-section, and baby Chance was born weighing 1 pound, 13 ounces. Adriana was removed from life support shortly afterward, and her family held her service the same month.

Chance has remained in neonatal intensive care since birth, receiving steady medical support. Adriana’s mother, April Newkirk, recently shared that he now weighs 11 pounds and continues to grow. He will soon move to another hospital for additional care from specialists. April expressed her appreciation for the kind messages, ongoing prayers, and financial support the family has received during this long process.
Earlier updates explained that Chance’s lungs are still developing and that he will remain in the NICU until his breathing improves. His older brother, Chase, has been able to see him through video, which the family described as a touching moment.

A fundraising campaign to help with medical and family expenses has reached more than half a million dollars. The family remains grateful for the continued encouragement as Chance progresses step by step.
