An 11-year-old Alabama boy, Jace Watkins, has died one week after being diagnosed with the flu. His family and community are mourning the sudden loss of the fifth grader, remembered for his kindness and bright smile.
First, Jace became sick a week before Christmas and visited a doctor the next day. His lungs sounded clear, and he returned home. According to his aunt, he told everyone he felt fine. However, that night he began vomiting and suffered a seizure.

Next, Jace was taken to Children’s of Alabama hospital and placed in intensive care. Doctors confirmed he had the flu, but his condition worsened when he stopped breathing. He was placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. Tests later showed swelling in his brain had blocked oxygen flow. Despite treatment, Jace passed away on December 27 at about 9:40 p.m.
Also, his family described the loss as heartbreaking and thanked supporters on a GoFundMe page. They asked for prayers and said donations will help with medical costs and funeral expenses. His school principal said Jace’s “sweet, genuine smile” touched everyone and that the community’s hearts are broken.

Jace’s death has left his family, friends, and school community grieving deeply as they remember a boy who brought light to everyone around him.
