The world was shaken on August 31, 1997, when Princess Diana died after a car crash in Paris. She was only 36.
Firefighter Xavier Gourmelon was among the first to reach the wreckage. At first, he didn’t realize the “blonde woman” was Diana. He held her hand as rescuers worked. In that moment, she whispered her final words: “My God, what’s happened?”

Gourmelon recalled, “I massaged her heart and she started breathing again. I thought she would live.” Sadly, Diana went into cardiac arrest and later died at the hospital from severe internal injuries.
The tragedy claimed the lives of her partner Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul. Only bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived. News of Diana’s death left millions grieving. Over 2.5 billion people worldwide watched her funeral.

Her kindness, compassion, and humanity remain unforgettable. Even decades later, Diana’s last words remind us of her vulnerability in that final moment.
Do you believe the world has seen another figure as beloved as Princess Diana since her passing?
