A bold Gen Z trend called “free bleeding” is making waves on TikTok — but doctors are warning of risks. The practice involves ditching tampons, pads, and menstrual cups and allowing the flow to run naturally.
Supporters say they want to avoid painful products, high costs, and plastic waste. “Chose the red skort this morning and now I’m free bleeding,” one TikTok user joked. Many also point to studies suggesting tampons may contain harmful chemicals like lead and arsenic.

But experts say caution is needed. Period blood can carry viruses such as Hepatitis B and C, which survive outside the body for days or weeks. Health professionals warn participants to avoid any “through-the-skin exposure” to reduce infection risk.
Aside from hygiene concerns and possible odor, experts say there are few long-term health dangers if done carefully. Would you try this growing trend — or do you think it’s going too far?
