Kris Kremers, 21, and Lisanne Froon, 22, traveled from the Netherlands to Panama in 2014. They planned to volunteer and explore the country’s stunning trails. But their dream trip became one of the most chilling disappearances in recent memory.

The friends set out on the Pianista Trail in Boquete on April 1. They never returned. A massive search revealed nothing at first, until a local woman discovered their backpack weeks later. Inside were passports, cash, phones, and a camera—still intact. The phones showed repeated calls to emergency services.
Investigators later found bone fragments, confirming both women had died. Yet the most disturbing clue came from the camera. More than 90 nighttime photos showed rocks, clothing, and even the back of Kris’s head with what looked like blood. Experts remain divided—were these cries for help, or signs of something darker?

“We believe the most likely explanation is an accident—but it’s not 100 percent,” said Dutch investigator Jürgen Snoeren.
The mystery remains unsolved. What do you think really happened on that trail?
