Elizabeth Jean Hackman has shared the family’s suspicions about the unexpected death of her father, Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. While an investigation is ongoing, she told TMZ the family believes carbon monoxide poisoning may be to blame.
Authorities discovered the couple and one of their dogs deceased in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26, following a welfare check requested by neighbors. Police have found no evidence of foul play, but Sheriff Adan Mendoza has not ruled anything out.
Hackman’s health leading up to his death remains unclear. His last public appearance nearly a year ago showed him using a cane. He is survived by his children, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie. He and Arakawa had no children together.
In a statement to Parade, Elizabeth, Leslie, and granddaughter Annie said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy… We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.” Memorial service details are pending.
