Greenland has firmly rejected Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring the territory. During his speech to Congress, Trump reiterated his desire, stating, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security… we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it.” He assured Greenlanders, “We will keep you safe. We will make you rich… take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”

Despite Denmark’s firm stance against selling Greenland, Trump remained undeterred, declaring, “I think we’re going to get it—one way or the other.” However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede responded bluntly: “We do not wish to be Americans. Greenland is ours.” He reinforced, “We do not want to be Americans, nor Danes, we are Greenlanders… Our future is decided by us in Greenland.”

Trump’s fixation on Greenland isn’t new. In January, he clashed with Denmark’s Prime Minister, questioning Denmark’s authority over the territory. He insisted, “I think we’re going to have it. I think the people want to be with us.”

With Greenland standing firm, Trump’s ambitions seem unlikely to succeed—unless he considers force, an unwise move against a NATO ally.
