Health regulator issues warning as vaccine given to millions is linked to debilitating illness

A Brooklyn man has been indicted five years after an acid attack that left a young woman with life-changing injuries.

Terrell Campbell, 29, is charged with first-degree assault for allegedly throwing sulfuric acid at Nafiah Ikram outside her family home on Long Island in March 2021. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a man approaching her, throwing the liquid, and fleeing.

Prosecutors say the acid caused severe burns to Ikram’s face, arms, and upper body. It also damaged her eye and throat. She has since undergone multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, and continues to receive medical treatment. Her recovery has been long and painful.

Authorities allege Campbell later posted a rap song online that appeared to reference the attack. Investigators said community tips, vehicle records, and phone searches linked him to the crime. According to prosecutors, online searches included questions about sulfuric acid and acid burns.

Campbell has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

Prosecutors described the indictment as a significant step for the victim, who has waited years for answers. The case will proceed in court.
