Body camera video shows a shoplifting suspect trying to shoot an officer inside a Walmart in Canton, Ohio. Police say the gun did not fire because it jammed.
Police say Shane Newman, 21, and Katarina Jeffrey, 23, tried to leave the store with unpaid items on Thursday afternoon. Store security called police and took them to a loss prevention office.
The video shows a calm start. An officer asked Newman if he had anything on him. Newman said he had only a phone and then handed over a container of drugs, reports say.
Moments later, Newman reached into a backpack and pulled out a gun. He pointed it at the officer from a few feet away. Jeffrey screamed as a security guard rushed in and knocked the gun away.

The officer later told supervisors that Newman pulled the trigger, but the gun did not go off. No one fired a shot. The officer also said he missed the gun during a search.
Police said Newman had an active warrant and officers considered him “armed and dangerous.”
Police charged Newman with:
- attempted murder
- assault on a peace officer
- robbery
- drug possession
- illegal gun possession
He remains in jail on a $1 million bond. Police also arrested Jeffrey after they found 9mm rounds on her, reports say.
