Molly Kochan’s life took a profound turn in 2011, when doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. Four years later, she received devastating news. The illness was terminal.
At 42, the New York writer made a bold and deeply personal choice. Rather than withdraw, she chose to fully engage with life. In her final years, she left her marriage and set out on an intimate journey of connection, pleasure, and self-discovery.

Importantly, Molly did not want her identity to revolve around illness. She first shared her story anonymously through a blog called Everything Leads to This. Later, she spoke more openly in the podcast Dying For Sex, created with her close friend Nikki Boyer. She explained that privacy helped her feel normal. She did not want pity, nor to be treated as fragile.
Writing became her outlet. Before her death on March 8, 2019, Molly revealed she had shared experiences with 188 men. She also completed a memoir, Screw Cancer: Becoming Whole, released after she passed away. Her story later inspired an FX television series.

In her final blog post, titled I Have Died, Molly reflected with honesty and grace. She admitted she had no universal lessons to offer. She simply knew what brought her joy. She also addressed friendships that faded, noting that people act according to their own limits.
In closing, she apologized to those she could not reach. Her final words showed clarity, acceptance, and a fierce respect for the life she chose to live.
