Tragedy struck in New York on May 17 when the Mexican navy training ship Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two and injuring 19. The 297-foot vessel, carrying 277 people, lost power and veered off course, causing its tall masts to strike the iconic bridge.

Shocking footage shows sailors falling as the masts snapped. Witness Lily Katz said, “There was someone dangling… from the harness… for at least 15 minutes before they were rescued.”
The ship wasn’t supposed to approach the bridge, but a mechanical failure forced it to reverse under it. Police confirmed the ship’s height exceeded the bridge clearance, leading to the collapse of the masts.
Despite the chaos, the bridge was quickly inspected and reopened. Mayor Eric Adams stated: “We are praying for everyone on board… and are grateful to our first responders.” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sorrow and confirmed ongoing support for victims’ families and those injured.
