A circus performance in Russia turned violent when a large bear attacked its handler in front of a live audience.
The 16-year-old bear, named Yashka, was performing in a travelling circus from Voronezh when the incident happened. During a routine act, the animal suddenly lunged at its handler and bit his arm. Witnesses said panic spread quickly as people realized the attack was real.
Another circus worker tried to stop the bear by kicking it and later using an electric shock device. Spectators, including families with children, rushed toward the exits. Some said there were no proper safety barriers between the animal and the audience.
The handler later claimed the bear had never shown aggression before. He suggested the animal was aging and suffering from joint pain, which may have affected its behavior. Circus management blamed spectators, saying camera flashes may have provoked the bear.
The incident has renewed concerns about the use of wild animals in traveling circuses. Bears are powerful predators, and critics argue that keeping them in confined environments and forcing them to perform can create unpredictable and dangerous situations.
The handler survived the attack. The event has sparked debate about animal welfare and public safety at live performances involving wild animals.
