As the two-year anniversary of the Titan submersible tragedy approaches, Netflix is set to release a new documentary, Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, on June 11. The film will revisit the 2023 catastrophe that killed all five passengers aboard the deep-sea craft.
The sub, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, was en route to the Titanic wreck when it vanished 435 miles off Newfoundland. Onboard were OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, billionaire Hamish Harding, Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Shahzada Dawood with his son Suleman.
A haunting simulation of the implosion has resurfaced ahead of the documentary’s release. Originally thought to be a pressure failure, new claims from former OceanGate scientist Dr. Steven Ross suggest a malfunction occurred days earlier on June 12. He testified passengers were left “tumbling” when a ballast tank failure tilted the sub sharply.
Despite no injuries then, the fatal dive took place six days later. The wreckage was found on June 22, confirming a “catastrophic implosion.”
Netflix’s documentary aims to shed light on the events that led to this deep-sea disaster.
