Unthinkable Accident in Virginia
Lester C. Harvey, 58, of Phenix, Virginia, died after a tragic hunting accident on December 9 in Lunenburg County. A fellow hunter shot a bear from a tree, and the falling animal struck Harvey, who was standing just 10 feet away. He was rushed to two hospitals but died from his injuries on December 13.
Remembering Lester Harvey
Described in his obituary as “an avid outdoorsman” and “a friend to all,” Harvey was a husband, father of five, and grandfather of eight. His son, Josh, shared, “He was injured extremely badly doing what he loved most along with his good friends.”

Investigation and Legal Status
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources confirmed the hunting party was legally pursuing the bear. No charges are expected, and officials clarified hunters may shoot treed bears under specific regulations.
Rare but Not Isolated
Although rare, similar incidents have occurred before, including one in Alaska in 2018 and another in North Carolina in 2019. These accidents highlight the unpredictable risks of wildlife encounters.
