Fifteen years after burying a time capsule with my classmates, I returned to my hometown to uncover what we left behind. I never expected to find the truth about the betrayal that shattered my life.
Back then, I was dating Brian, and Jess was my best friend. The night we buried the capsule, Brian avoided me, and I was heartbroken. “You promised to love me for my whole life! Are those words meaningless now?!” I had shouted. His cold reply: “You ruined everything yourself.”
Now, returning to the schoolyard, I was nervous. When we opened the capsule, I found a letter from Jess. “I started a rumor about you and Malcolm… I forged messages… I didn’t care about the consequences.”
Jess admitted she had wanted to be me, even if it meant destroying me. “Sorry isn’t enough,” I told her. But she wanted to make amends.
Later, Brian approached me. “I haven’t seen Jess since high school… I was an idiot for believing the lie.” He asked to take me on a date.
I smiled. “Fine. But only if you win me a new locket.”
