Jackson James Rice Has Died Aged 18

Jackson James Rice, known as JJ Rice, has tragically died at 18 years old. Rice was preparing to compete in the new kite-foiling event at the Paris Olympics, described by ANOC as “sailing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing and paragliding into one extreme sport.” He would have been the first Caucasian athlete to represent Tonga after finishing eighth at a Sail Sydney event.

Tributes are pouring in for Rice. One person wrote, “Rest in peace and condolences to the family.” Another said, “So very tragic for a young man with what would have been a spectacular life before him.” A heartbroken friend shared, “You’re the most amazing friend anyone could ask for and anyone who has spent time with you would agree.”

Rice, born in the U.S. to British parents, grew up in Ha’apai, Tonga, where his parents run a tourist lodge. He trained and competed in Europe before returning to Ha’apai. Rice’s father, Darren, confirmed he died from a suspected shallow water blackout while free-diving.

Rice’s sister, Lily, honored him on Facebook, saying, “I was blessed with the most amazing brother in the whole world… he made so many amazing friends all over the world.” Rice was also remembered for his bravery, having risked his life to save others on multiple occasions. His funeral will be announced later.
